Our gold-medal winning women’s 60s squad have added another accolade after being named as “Masters Team of the Year” at the Scottish Hockey Awards. The squad’s achievements in Valencia last year – where they beat England in running penalties to secure European gold – were recognised once again by the wider hockey community in last night’s glittering ceremony. They were up against the M70s, who lifted the Celtic Cup, and came 4th in their Euro competition.
The award comes hot on the heels of the Scottish Women in Sport “Team of the Year” win in November last year.
Scottish Hockey hosted the awards for the first time in five years, with CEO Barry Cawte commenting: “There’s a lot to celebrate at every level of the sport. There are incredible people doing amazing things for hockey, and tonight we get to celebrate those people.”
The W60s won the Bell Ingram-sponsored category, and there was success too for other players and volunteers well-known in the Scottish Masters Hockey community. Arthur Robertson from our M65s scooped the Volunteer of the Year award, for the work he does with Falkirk and Linlithgow HC. Various players had a hand in coaching or supporting teams and players nominated in the awards. Well done to all.
It’s been a busy time for the W60s. Last weekend the squad were guests of fellow Scottish Women in Sport “Team of the Year” nominees, Glasgow City FC as they took on Celtic FC in an SWPL league match.
A great afternoon was had by all with refreshments at half time and a couple of mentions for the W60s over the tannoy which raised a cheer from the crowd.
Glasgow City were the deserved winners, the winning goal being scored after 41 seconds! Many thanks to Cas of Glasgow City for the kind invitation and brilliant hospitality.
