Scotland’s Masters Women’s W55, W60, W65 and W70 squads produced a series of encouraging performances at the GB&I 4 Nations in Belfast last weekend, securing two podium finishes and a runners-up spot while continuing their preparations for this summer’s World Cup.
The standout result came from the W65s, who finished as runners-up after winning two of their three matches. Following an opening defeat to England, the squad responded impressively with victories over England LX65s and Wales. Throughout the weekend they combined attacking intent with composed team hockey, demonstrating the quality and confidence that will serve them well in the months ahead.
The W55s also enjoyed an excellent tournament, finishing third in an exceptionally tight competition. Scotland recorded impressive victories over both Ireland and Wales and finished level on points with Ireland and England, with goal difference ultimately deciding the final placings. The squad’s performances were characterised by outstanding work rate, determination and resilience, underlining their ability to compete with the strongest teams in the age group.
For the W60s, the weekend was defined by narrow margins. A last-minute defeat to England and a single-goal loss to Ireland left the squad frustrated but encouraged by the quality of their performances. Their persistence was rewarded on the final day when captain Janet Jack’s late penalty corner strike secured a deserved 1-0 victory over Wales. While the results did not fully reflect their efforts, the squad showed continual improvement and finished the tournament on a well-earned high.
The W70s made history in their inaugural GB&I 4 Nations tournament and left with plenty to celebrate. After an impressive opening performance against England, the squad recorded a memorable 1-0 victory over England LX70s thanks to a superb strike from Jane Neil. A hard-fought final match against Wales secured an overall third-place finish, a remarkable achievement for a newly established international squad that competed throughout the weekend with minimal substitutes and unwavering determination.
Across all four age groups, Scotland’s Masters Women demonstrated the depth, spirit and competitiveness that continue to drive the programme forward. Strong performances against England, Ireland and Wales, combined with valuable international experience, leave the squads well placed as preparations intensify for the upcoming World Cup.
